Swim Team Requirements & Guidelines

You do not need to have any previous swim team experience!  However, you do need to be able to swim freestyle and backstroke for 2 lengths.

You must register on-line at www.bpsregister.com, pay the appropriate fees, and turn in necessary paperwork to the school office prior to the first day of practice. The first day of practice is Monday, November 4th.  See the Registration Info Page for complete details.

Even though we prefer to have everyone in the team suit, you are not required to buy a team suit or clothing.  You do need a competition suit that does not have another team's logo on it.  If you wear a cap, it must be a Derby cap.  Suits and spirit wear are available through the Varsity Shop in Birmingham. There is an on-line store set up for our team. The deadline is a hard deadline so please do not put off placing your order if you want something from the online store. Caps will be sold throughout the season by the coaches and parent liasons.

Everyone must come to the required number of practices per week (see practice schedule page) and dress up (no t-shirt and jeans!) on meet days to be eligible to swim in a given meet. This is not negotiable!

Swim Team members have made the choice to not participate in Ski Club until after swim season is over.

Each swimmer will swim in at least 2-3 events each meet.  Coach Warnica (Red & White Teams) will choose the events for each swimmer.  The goal is for everyone to swim in as many different events as possible throughout the season.

Each school has ONE team comprised of 6th-8th graders.

Meets last about 1 1/2 hours.  There are 7 individual events and 3 relays.  Please plan to stay for the entire meet to cheer on your team mates, even if you are done swimming!

Girl swimmers are divided into two teams:  Red and White.  This is based on previous experience and ability. We do try to have an even number of girls on each team.  There are separate meet and practice schedules for each team!

There will be bus transportation to away meets at BCS and Berkshire, but not back to Derby. Away meets at Cranbrook or Bloomfield Hills will require Derby swimmers to get themselves to the meet by the announced times (usually 5 or 5:30pm) Please contact Mr. Warnica as soon as possible if this is a problem.

All parents are required to volunteer for at least two home meets.  See the Volunteer Sign Up page for more information.
